GMRS Radio & GMRS Frequencies 

TriSquare 900MHz Walkie-Talkies

 For the consumer, the most attractive alternative is a relatively new type of handie on the market that works on 900 mhz using "frequency hopping", similar to CDMA cell phone technology.  The big advantage to this type of technology is that it's virtually impossible for someone else to eavesdrop on you or interfere with you.  The handies are license free and use 1-watt.  No higher wattage models are available.

Amazingly, there are only a couple of manufacturers of handies on the 900 mhz band.  Here we have the TriSquare handies, which are priced very much the same as some of the higher end GMRS units.

These units are an excellent alternative to GMRS, although opinions of range vary from user to user... much the same as different model GMRS radios!

TriSquare only makes two models; a basic model and a model with more bells and whistles.

If you're someone who is concerned about privacy and/or you live in an area with crowded GMRS channels, these may be what you're looking for.  Prices have come down since their introduction, and are now quite reasonable. 

Motorola also makes a couple of 900 Mhz handies, but they are marketed as "business radios" so they are priced considerable higher than the TriSquare.
